Originating in Scandinavia, the ancient Goths worshipped the same Norse pantheon as other Northern traditions and viewed runes as mystical symbols from the spirit realm, using them to read the cycles of fate, known as Örlog. As the Goths migrated across Europe into North Africa, they stopped using runes in response to Christian influence and adopted a new alphabet to mask their Pagan origins. Yet the staves, or characters of the Gothic alphabet, were rooted in the sacred runes and still used for divining, leading the Roman Catholic Church to declare the Gothic alphabet “heretical” 1400 years ago.

Revealing here for the first time the system of seership embedded in the Gothic alphabet, Nigel Pennick examines the 25 Gothic staves and shows their divinatory insights that differ from the traditional Futhark of the 24 Norse runes. Showing how to use Gothic staves for divination, Pennick considers each stave alone and as part of its aett, the three divisions of the runic alphabet. He provides rune spreads and divination techniques to gain insight and explores how new meanings arise when staves are combined in dyads or triads.

The guidebook details the history of the Goths, including their division into the eastern Ostragoths and western Visigoths, and explores their spiritual beliefs and cosmology, noting that their holistic view of the interconnectedness of all things underpinned their divination practices and magical systems.

Returns for damaged or faulty items 

  • In the unlikely event that your order arrives damaged or faulty, you will need to email us within 5 days of receiving your order.
  • To ensure that returns are dealt with efficiently, please send a photo of the faulty item, we will also require your name, invoice date and number along with details of fault or damage.
  • We only accept returns for faulty or damaged goods and do not accept returns if it is only the packaging that is damaged.
  • We make every effort to ensure your parcel arrives in good order and good time, however we are not responsible for any loss or damage to your order during transit.
  • Customers are responsible for shipping and handling charges.
  • When we are in receipt of the returned item, we will process an exchange or refund (minus shipping costs) within 2 days.
